We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all those who have used our mediation services and continue to do so. We look forward to the next 15 years! To mark the occasion we have refreshed our branding and will be holding an event in late summer to celebrate. Look out for details.
A short history of Independent Mediators…
In 2007 four (Charles Dodson, Michel Kallipetis QC, Bill Marsh and Nicholas Pryor) of Europe’s leading full-time civil and commercial mediators joined forces to form a dedicated mediation chambers offering a new model for independent mediation practice. Over the years we have seen two of the original four retire and welcomed new members into the chambers meaning we now number nine full-time commercial mediators.
Our mediators have been at the forefront of the development of mediation in both the UK and internationally. They have been spreading the word about mediation for at least 15 years, for some of them the journey started in the late 1980’s / early 1990’s.
Accolades…
The mediators are acknowledged as some of the leading UK mediators in Chambers & Partners & Legal 500. They are also recognised as some of the most experienced in worldwide with all being listed in the international directory Who’s Who Legal: Mediation which recognises the world’s leading commercial mediators.
Who’s Who Legal awarded Independent Mediators ‘Mediation Firm of the Year’ in 2019 and again in 2020. In 2019 Bill Marsh received their award for ‘Mediator of the Year’ and Michel Kallipetis QC received the award in 2017 and 2020.
What we do…
We mediate a wide range of commercial disputes in almost every sector of business and law. Values range from tens of thousands to multi-billion pounds and are between parties from all walks of life and all over the world, including companies both public and private, national governments, public bodies/authorities and group actions. Our mediators travel all over the UK and internationally for mediations as well as mediating online.
Our structure….
Independent Mediators is neither another mediation provider nor a mediator panel but operates like a barrister’s chambers. It offers a unique way of making the services of experienced independent mediators available to clients. The mediators are self-employed and independent, and share a central service to administer all their mediations.
The structure ensures maximum convenience and speed for clients with minimum overheads. Clients simply pay the mediators fee with no additional administration charges.
Some stats…
Since our inception in 2007 our mediators have undertaken over 6,550 mediations (hundreds more if you include those they have undertaken prior to joining IM!). The approximate total value of claims mediated is in excess of £40 billion. Since the advent of mediating online in March 2020 our mediators have undertaken over 780 mediations online.
We look forward to the next 15 years and foresee even further growth in the use of mediation considering the increased focus on mediation over the last year with the Singapore Convention, the Civil Justice Council’s in principle endorsement of ADR, the MOJ call for evidence on this topic and the CJC’s proposed changes to ADR requirements within pre-action protocols.
